Fionn Griffiths won the final race of the Jeep 48Straight Series in San Luis Obispo, CA today. She bested Melissa Buhl in the final round. Melissa maintained her overall points lead and walked away with the series title, a heap of cash, and a Jeep! Visit 48Straight.com for more info.

Jeep 48 Straight Update: SLO Registration, The Canyons Airs Sunday!

It's that time again--time to encourage all you ripping ladies to sign up for the Jeep 48Straight dual slalom races later this month. It's the series finale and it's happening in San Luis Obispo, CA. Click here to register. The race is super fun, you'll have a chance to win your fame and fortune, and it's definitely worth the $80 to register!

Also, the race from The Canyons last month will air on Sunday, October 12 on CBS. Be sure to check your local listings and set up the TiVo!

Avoiding Gravity Gear Faux Pas

Like tennis and golf, cycling has a rich history that dictates what participants may or may not wear while engaged in the sport. Wear a hoodie on the golf course and you may not get a tee time. Show up to your tennis match in yoga pants and prepare for some ridicule. Similarly, there are subtle, yet real fashion rules that dictate the gravity side of cycling.

To a newcomer, riding bikes is confusing enough, what with all of the pedals and levers and everything. Add in helmets, eyewear, gloves, shoes, and, if she's embarking on a cross country or road career, Spandex, and you have a recipe for fashion disaster. We've all seen it, and most of us fell victim to it before embarrassed friends or fellow riders steered us in the right direction.

Lately, I've noticed that things in the lift-served world are starting to get a bit out of hand. The improper use of gravity gear, mainly as witnessed at Deer Valley (which, ironically, is a place where posh ski attire is essentially required to board the lifts during the winter), really has me worried. Therefore, I am creating a guide to spell out the hows, whys, and why-nots of proper gravity gear usage.

Safety is the first consideration of most gravity gear guidelines. Over the next few weeks, I'll cover the basics from helmets to shoes to give newer riders some background for gravity's seemingly-arbitrary rules, and to give more experienced riders the ammo they need to dig their hopelessly-hindered friends out of their hideously-attired ruts.

48Straight Jeep King of the Mountain Wrap-Up

What a weekend! The King of the Mountain dual slalom course at The Canyons was intense. Eric Carter built the course and it was no joke. Big jumps, flat corners, a steep slope, and gravelly dirt made for challenging conditions for everyone.

At qualifying on Friday, putting down a clean run was the ticket to success. Anneke Beerten put down the fastest first run, gaining nearly two seconds over Melissa Buhl. On her second run, though, Anneke slid out in a corner and aggravated an ankle injury that she's been dealing with most of the season. Lisa Myklak threw down two solid runs, but a missed gate on her first run left her disqualified. Local ripper Gale Dahlager crashed in her first run, as did Stephanie Nychka, who had been ruling the course all morning. Neither was able to recover the lost time on their second runs.

The whole event is made for TV, so the rules are a bit different than a USAC or UCI race. Anneke was unable to race in the final on Saturday (even with her crash, she had qualified 6th). In order to create full brackets, the remaining riders each moved up a place, allowing the 9th-qualified rider into the final. Gale was that rider, but injuries from her crash sidelined her as well. Lisa moved into the 8th-place spot with a chance to take out Melissa in the first round of racing. We'll let you watch the action when the race airs on CBS in October!

The final race of the series will be held October 25 in San Luis Obispo, CA. Heading into that race, Melissa Buhl has the series lead, but Kathy Pruitt is within striking distance of the title too.

Registration Is Open for the 48 Straight Jeep King of the Mountain at The Canyons

The first event held at Diablo Freeride Park, NJ a few weeks ago got rave reviews, and we expect the same from the race at The Canyons. The event is open to pro and expert mountaincross and slalom racers. The top 8 women receive cash prizes ranging from $5000 for first to $500 for 8th. Registration closes on September 17th!

Jeep King of the Mountain Results from Diablo

I was going to leave you all in suspense about the winners of the Jeep King of the Mountain dual slalom races held this weekend at Diablo Freeride Park, NJ. But I'll be nice and post the results before you have a chance to see all of the action on TV. Kathy Pruitt bested Melissa Buhl for the win and a pocketful of cash! This event will air in September, and the next event in the series takes place at the end of September at The Canyons, UT.

Last Day to Register for Jeep King of the Mountain at Diablo

Today is the last day of registration for the Jeep King of the Mountain race at Diablo Freeride Park, NJ this weekend. There are currently 6 girls signed up for the event. Adding at least two more women would make for a full bracket and full prize payout. Right now, if you're women 7 and 8, you're garuanteed to win no less than $500. Ladies, the Jeep King of the Mountain Series Needs You!

I just received an email from Lisa Myklak about the 48 Straight Jeep King of the Mountain Series. Apparently, there are very few girls registered for the Diablo Freeride Park event August 21-23 in New Jersey.
-The Jeep King of the Mountain races are open to any pro who races downhill or slalom.
-The event and series will be televised on CBS.
-It costs just $80 to register, and the prize purse goes 8 deep.
-First takes home $5000, 8th place gets $500.
That's right. I can't think can't think of any bigger incentive to sign up.
Oh, wait, there is one more thing: a carpooling road trip from the west to NJ. Lisa is attempting to coordinate a carpooling van to take a crew of ladies out to the race. And there may be some discounted lodging opportunities at Diablo too.
